You Don't Hate Photos.
You've Just Never Had
a Good One.
Most headshot experiences are genuinely bad. But a bad headshot isn't your fault — it's a photographer's problem. Here's how we fix it.
Be honest. When someone asks for a professional headshot, your first instinct is mild dread. You picture harsh lighting, an awkward forced smile, and a photo that makes you look like you're either running for city council or being booked for something.
At Steffen Studios, we've photographed corporate teams, solo entrepreneurs, LinkedIn-obsessed executives, and people who have said "I photograph terribly" approximately 47 times before we even started. Every single one walked out with photos they actually liked. Here's how.
We make the awkward part fast
The number one reason people look stiff in photos? They've been standing in front of a camera for too long thinking about what to do with their hands.
Our sessions are intentionally quick. Most individual headshots are done in under 30 minutes — not to rush you, but because the best photos almost always happen in the first 10 minutes before people start overthinking it.
You show up. We chat for a minute. We shoot. You leave. Your LinkedIn is already better.
Lighting does more than you think
Here's a secret the photography industry doesn't advertise enough: most people don't photograph badly. Most photographers just light badly.
Good lighting smooths skin, defines structure, and makes eyes pop. Bad lighting creates shadows in the wrong places, washes out features, and makes everyone look like they haven't slept in a week.
Our professional studio lighting is calibrated specifically for skin tones across all complexions, reducing shine without looking flat, and creating natural depth that puts all the focus on you — not the setup. This isn't a phone camera in a conference room.
The lighting alone accounts for about 70% of why a headshot looks professional or amateur. It's the single biggest variable we control so you don't have to think about it.
We direct you — so you don't have to figure it out
Ever been told to "just act natural" in front of a camera? Congratulations, you now feel the least natural you've ever felt in your life.
We don't do that. We give you specific, simple directions — where to put your chin, how to angle your shoulders, when to relax your jaw. You don't need to know anything about posing. That's our job.
The result is a photo that looks like you — just the version of you that walked into an important meeting feeling confident and ready.
Not the version of you that's wondering if you remembered to reply to that email.
What to wear (and what to skip)
We send a full prep guide before every session, but here's the short version so you can start thinking about it now:
- Solid colors — navy, charcoal, burgundy, forest green
- Something you'd wear to an important meeting
- Layers that add depth — blazers, cardigans
- Bring two options for variety
- Bright white — blows out under studio light
- Busy patterns or logos
- Anything you're not totally comfortable in
- Excessive jewelry that competes with your face
Bring two outfit options. It takes zero extra session time and gives you twice the variety in your final gallery. Most clients end up happy they did.
The turnaround is fast because your time matters
We know you're not booking a headshot session because you have unlimited free time. You need photos, you need them to look great, and you need to get back to running your business.
That's exactly how we operate. Sessions are efficient, editing is clean and professional — not over-filtered — and you get your gallery back fast. No waiting weeks. No "we'll follow up soon."
